SECTION THREE

Connecting with Residents

Encouraging existing residents to connect with what your community offers can help attract and retain your citizens – who make up your valuable workforce.

This section gives you tips and strategies to ensure existing residents want to stay in your community and become ambassadors to help attract new residents and talent.

Often, we’re too busy to fully embrace everything our communities have to offer. Yet, when we do, we make new friends, discover new favorite places and activities, and build relationship with our cities.

Finding and telling the important stories of our cities enables us to share the benefits our communities offer and provides content for our community ambassadors to share with others.

Developing tours is a great way to engage existing residents and visitors, alike, to become familiar with the amenities and quality of life your community has to offer.

Setting the Scene

  • Potential Partners – local government, school district, neighborhood associations,
  • Role – Create and promote the resources, experiences, and Ambassador program
  • Cost/Funding – Time is the largest cost but most organizations, schools and companies have a budget for outings or speakers. Local government and philanthropy also frequently supports community engagement initiatives like these.
  • Examples – In Detroit, nonprofit organizations and companies pay to take locals on experiences that connect them to where they live and work. Additionally, Bank of America has sponsored tour series geared towards locals and Skillman Foundation provided funding for community tours for youth.
